Hope and love
How love fuels hope.
Hey! How are you today?
While looking for how best to start today’s newsletter, I thought to say this, “You’ll be okay.” Yes, you will. Regardless of how today went, you’ll be fine (inserts warm hugs)…
Now, let’s return to our series on hope.
I do love the verse in the Bible that says, "Owe no man anything except to love one another”. It puts a greater weight on the subject of love, shifting it from passive to active. It places a responsibility on you and me to prioritize loving everyone around us, irrespective of who they are and where they come from. It is a love that is intentional and not dependent on just feelings. I do believe having this perspective about love is indeed a game changer, creating better spaces, communities, families and relationships.
What does this have to do with the theme of the month? To explain, here is an illustration. Let’s liken hope to an engine. For any engine to work, it has to be powered by something—fuel, water, or even sunlight (solar-powered engines). For our engine (hope), the fuel is love..
Love plays a major role in us having hope, and that’s what we’ll be dwelling on today: the intersection between hope and love.
In the last newsletter (see here), we saw how having a good circle of friends and family can help you remain hopeful in difficult times. This truth is profound because good friends and family provide a kind of support that’s hard to find anywhere else. But what is it, exactly, that makes that support so potent? For me, its love and we’ll be examining that more closely today.
Love, not just the romantic kind, but the deep, foundational love that exists in friendships, families, and communities. The kind of love that is expressed not just in flattering words but with action. This love is a major driving force for hope. Hope is a beautiful expectation, a belief that tomorrow would be better. But love—love is what gives that expectation substance. It's the anchor for hope. Here are some of the reasons why it is so:
Love provides support we need to keep hope alive:
Love is not just a warm feeling; it's a verb — an action. It is someone showing up with a plate of food, not because you asked, but because the person knows how tough school is and how food is most certainly not your priority at the moment. It is a simple phone call on a hard day, or a quiet hand on your shoulder. When you’re at your lowest, a friend's love, shown through their support, can serve as a tangible reason to believe that you’ll get through this phase and that things will get better. That support from the people who love you is what gives you the strength to keep going when your courage feels thin.
Love is a powerful source of motivation:
Beyond support, love motivates. We are often able to push through struggles and face obstacles not just for ourselves, but for the ones we love and hold dear. The hope to build a better future for your children, to have the ability to cater to your parents in their old age, or to support your younger siblings so they don’t have it as tough as you did growing up. The motivation to keep showing up for a friend, or the desire to be a better partner—these are all hopes fueled by love. Love is the force that makes you bounce back when you’ve been knocked down.
Love inspires:
When you witness someone else's unwavering love, it inspires a belief in the goodness of the world. Seeing someone's kindness towards a stranger or their loyalty to a friend can restore your faith in humanity, which is a critical component of hope. Love shows us that there is good to be found, even in the darkest of times, and that is truly an inspiration.
Love builds resilience, the kind required to remain hopeful:
The kind of resilience required to remain hopeful is not about being a superhuman; it's about having a safe space to fail. When you are truly loved, you have an emotional sanctuary. You know you can make mistakes, fall, and still be accepted. That unconditional acceptance is what builds the emotional fortitude to get back up and try again. It gives you the security to hope, knowing that even if things don’t go as planned, you are still worthy of love and a better future.
So, while hope is a beautiful and essential part of being human, it is love that makes it powerful. Love transforms hope from a fleeting expectation into a grounded, resilient force that can withstand anything. It gives us a reason to look forward, a reason to fight, and a reason to believe.
I hope this piece resonates with you but way more than that, I hope it serves as your reminder that you are loved so, don’t give up hope.
Till next time, Cheers to you!
